Academic Writing
Essays, theses, and papers that say what you mean.
From your first undergraduate essay to your dissertation defense. How to argue, structure, cite, and revise without losing your voice in the formality.
Five stages
The Writing Studio. Coming soon
A library of small, beautifully made lessons on writing, taught the way I've been teaching it for years. Not as a set of rules, but as a way of thinking that you can carry into anything you write.
What we believe about writing
01
Good writing isn't about big words. It's about saying exactly what you mean, in the smallest space possible, without losing what makes it yours.
02
Every lesson is short, focused on one idea, and ends with something to try. You learn by writing, not by watching someone else write.
03
For students, researchers, professionals, and anyone writing their way through a transition. Whatever you're becoming, your writing should support it.
The Curriculum
Each track follows the same five stages, because the mechanics of writing well are the same whether you're writing a personal essay or a research paper. The difference is what you're thinking about at each stage.
01
Essays, theses, and papers that say what you mean.
From your first undergraduate essay to your dissertation defense. How to argue, structure, cite, and revise without losing your voice in the formality.

02
Write the things only you can write.
Essays, memoir, reflection, and the writing that helps you understand your own life. The most useful, least-taught form of writing.
Five stages
03
Clear emails, sharp memos, work that gets noticed.
The writing that builds your career, even when no one calls it writing. Emails, proposals, reports, decks, and the discipline of saying things simply.
Five stages
04
Communicate what you've found, without burying it.
For graduate students, researchers, and anyone who has to write what they discover. How to frame, structure, and write research that actually reaches the reader.
Five stages
05
The essays that change where your life goes.
Statements of purpose, scholarship essays, cover letters, personal statements. The kind of writing where the stakes are high and the rules are unclear.

Lesson 01. Pre-writing
“The blank page isn't the problem. The expectation you put on it is.”
Here's the move I want you to try the next time you sit down to write something hard:
Don't open a fresh document. Open a notes app, a piece of paper, or the back of an envelope. Write at the top, in your own handwriting: “What am I actually trying to say?” Then answer it, messily, in three sentences or fewer.
That's pre-writing. That's where the writing actually happens. The blank document later is just transcription.
Try it
Pick something you've been putting off writing. An essay, an email, a difficult message. Before you open the document, write three sentences by hand answering: What am I actually trying to say? Then notice how different the page feels when you finally open it.
Every lesson in the Studio is built like this. Short. Honest. Something to take with you.
Be first in line
The Writing Studio opens in cohorts. When the doors open next, the waitlist gets first access. And the people on it get the only discount we ever offer.
One email when we open. No spam. Always honest.
A note from me
I've spent years sitting across from students whose ideas were brilliant and whose drafts were tangled.
Every single time, the work wasn't teaching them how to write. It was helping them trust that what they had to say was worth saying clearly. The Studio is the place I'm building for that work to keep happening, with more people, in more ways, without needing to be in the same room.
If you've ever felt like you have something to say but the page keeps fighting you, this is for you. I'd love to have you in the first cohort.
