The short version: what you type into Scholarwell stays on your device, unless you choose to create an account. We don't sell data, show ads or use tracking cookies.
What stays on your device
Your answers, plan, school, dates, notes, trackers, check-ins and applications are saved in your browser's storage on the device you use. Unless you create an account, they are not sent to us and we have no copy. If you clear your browser data, they are deleted from that device, so download a copy now and then from My data.
If you create an account
An account is optional. It lets you sign in on another laptop or phone and carry on where you left off. When you create one, we keep:
- Your username. We don't ask for your name, email address or phone number.
- Your password and recovery code, stored only in a scrambled form that can't be turned back into the original. Nobody at Simpl-Ify can read them or tell you what they are.
- A copy of your Scholarwell progress, such as your plan, notes, trackers and check-ins, so it can follow you to other devices. It travels over an encrypted connection and is stored in a database run by our database provider, Neon, in the United States.
- A sign-in cookie, which keeps you signed in on that device for up to 30 days. It is used only for your account, never for tracking or advertising.
Simpl-Ify's owner can see each account's username, the date it was created and when it was last used, to run the service. Nobody at Simpl-Ify reads your saved progress. We do look at anonymous totals across all accounts, such as how many people are applying to graduate school or which countries are most common, to decide what to improve. These totals never show one person, and groups smaller than three are combined.
You can change your password, sign out or delete your account at any time from Your account. Deleting your account removes your username, password, recovery code and the saved copy of your progress straight away.
What we receive, and why
- Your school's web address, when you open Your school, so our server can read that school's public pages. It is not linked to you.
- A university's web address and the course you're looking for, when you search for programs, and a program's web address when you open its details. Our server uses them to read those public pages. Nothing about you is sent with them.
- Nothing from your documents, unless you ask for a detailed review. When you add a CV, statement or transcript to the fit check, it is read in your browser and never uploaded. If you choose a detailed review and agree to it, the text of those documents and your fit check answers are sent through our server to Anthropic, the company that makes the AI model Claude, to write the review. We don't store them, and Anthropic's commercial terms don't allow it to train its models on them. Program pages may also be sent to Anthropic to summarise them, which involves no personal information.
- Your alert choices, if you turn on scholarship alerts (Scholarwell Plus). Your browser gives us an address that can only be used to send notifications to that device. We keep it with the choices you've set (your nationality, the countries you'd like to study in, your level and field, and the scholarships you've saved) and your membership key, so we can send alerts that match you. Turning alerts off, or your membership ending, deletes them.
- Your email address, if you sign up for the Sunday Note. Our newsletter provider, beehiiv, stores it and sends the emails, and we can see the list of subscribers with when and where each person signed up. You can unsubscribe from any email.
- Payment details, if you join Scholarwell Plus or pay for a one-to-one session. Payments are handled by Stripe. We see your name and email, what you bought and, for Plus, whether it is active. We never see your card number.
- A membership key, saved on your device after you join, so Scholarwell can check with Stripe that your membership is active.
- Anything you email us, such as a request for a one-to-one session.
- Standard request logs, such as IP address and browser type, kept by our host, Vercel, to run the site and keep it secure.
What we don't do
We don't sell or rent personal information, run advertising, or use analytics or tracking cookies. Fonts and images load from our own site.
